Haroen Calehr, Attorney at Law
Born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Haroen Calehr started practicing law right after graduating from Texas Southern University, J.D, in 2001, and then followed by graduating from Tulane Law School, LL.M., in 2002 where he received his Master in Law in Admiralty and Maritime Law. Prior to pursing his LL.M, Haroen worked for two Houston law firms, a U.S. Federal Magistrate Judge, and U.S. Bankruptcy Judge. Haroen is fluent in Dutch, German, and Indonesian.
Haroen currently focuses his practice in the following areas of the law: Litigation, Personal Injury, Admiralty Law, Immigration Law, Corporate Law, Bankruptcy, and Criminal Law.
Haroen is Board Certified in Immigration and Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. There are over 70,000 attorneys licensed to practice in Texas. Only 7,000 have been recognized as Board Certified specialists in one of 21 select areas of law. The Texas Board of Legal Specialization was established in 1974 by the Supreme Court of Texas at the request of State Bar of Texas and is the only governing board authorized to certify attorneys in legal specialty areas.
He is also a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas. The College of the State Bar of Texas is an honorary society of lawyers who are among the best trained attorneys in Texas. Members are qualified attorneys who are interested in both high ethical standards and improved training for all Texas attorneys. Haroen is also a certified Domestic Arbitrator and Attorney Ad Litem. Haroen has a notable 10th Circuit Federal case, Tulengkey v. Gonzales, which has been published.
Haroen was awarded The Top Lawyers for the People Award by the H Texas Magazine. He has also been named Super Lawyer. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.
Haroen was also presented with an Award of Appreciation for the efforts extended to the citizens of Indonesia in 16 states in 2003 for the seminars that he toured with the Indonesian Consulate General in Houston. He currently serves Of Counsel for the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Houston, Texas, as well as for Young & Husain, PLLC. He also serves as a committee member for the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, which is appointed by the Supreme Court of Texas.
Haroen has been interviewed on CNN Asian Edition Program regarding the prospects for democracy in Indonesia and the new Habibie government. He was also a guest speaker at a Continuing Legal Education seminar on deportation and removal proceedings. Previously, he taught a cross-cultural training seminar for ANADARKO executives on Indonesian politics and economy, Houston, TX, 2002.
He is an active member of Harris County Bar Association and American Bar Associations, the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Young Lawyers Association, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, The American Inns of Court – Houston Chapter, The Netherlands Texas Business Association, IABA, Indonesian American Business Association, Phi Alpha Delta, and the U.S. Maritime Law Association.

Spring 2013, Houston, Texas – Haroen with U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, the first elected female Senator from Hawaii, the first Asian-American woman elected to the Senate, the first U.S. Senator born in Japan, and the nation’s first Buddhist Senator.
September 2010, Dubois, Wyoming – Haroen at Gerry Spences’ Trial Lawyer College, where Haroen studied. The Trial Lawyers College is dedicated to training and educating lawyers and judges who are committed to the jury system and to representing and obtaining justice for individuals; the poor, the injured, the forgotten, the voiceless, the defenseless and the damned, and to protecting the rights of such people from corporate and government oppression. In all of its activities, the Trial Lawyers College will foster and nourish an open atmosphere of caring for people regardless of their race, creed, religion, national origin, physical abilities, gender or sexual orientation.

Teresa Pham Messer, Associate
Teresa Pham Messer received her Juris Doctor Degree from South Texas College of Law. She is admitted to the State Bar of Texas and practices exclusively in the area of immigration law. As the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, Ms. Messer appreciates the difficulties many immigrants to the United States have encountered in their country of origin.
Ms. Messer is committed to assisting refugee populations fleeing persecution, as well as helping immigrant communities better assimilate into American society. As an undergraduate at the University of Houston, Ms. Messer was recognized by the Darfurian Association of Greater Houston for her work in establishing a student organization to provide English classes to Sudanese immigrants. While in law school, Ms. Messer worked as a legal intern for Boat People SOS, a non-profit organization providing legal services to low-income Asian immigrants, to assist Vietnamese asylum seekers with the United Nations’ refugee status determination process. In addition, Ms. Messer represented clients as a Student Attorney in the South Texas College of Law Immigration Clinic. She has also worked on complex business immigration issues as a law clerk for a leading immigration firm. After law school and prior to joining Calehr & Associates, Ms. Messer worked for an immigration law firm in Pennsylvania.
Teresa serves as the co-chair of the Law of Land-Immigration and Naturalization Committee of the Houston Young Lawyers Association (HYLA) and as a committee member of the Houston Bar Association (HBA) Minority Opportunities in the Legal Profession (MOILP) Committee. She is also an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), the American Bar Association (ABA), the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA), Asian American Bar Association (AABA), and the Vietnamese American Chamber of Commerce of Houston (VACC).
